Saturday, 12 Sep 2026 {HMC} Somali National Army forces, including units from the Gorgor Commandos and Special Forces, have announced that they seized control of the Geel-gub area and several key military positions in Middle Shabelle region during an operation against Al-Shabaab.
The operation involved the 18th Gorgor Commando Brigade, the 12th Special Forces Brigade, and the 3rd Brigade of the Somali National Army.
The forces said the locations they captured had previously been under the control of Al-Shabaab, which had maintained a presence in the areas for an extended period.
The operation is part of ongoing military offensives by Somali government forces in parts of Middle Shabelle aimed at pushing Al-Shabaab out of its strongholds and expanding areas under government control.
Security officials said the operation is also intended to restore security and government administration while enabling residents in the affected areas to live in greater stability and gain access to government services.
The Somali National Army has intensified operations against Al-Shabaab in central and southern Somalia in recent months, particularly in areas where the militant group continues to maintain bases and launch attacks.
