Sunday 30, August 2026 {HMC}Â After a long period, the Somali government has succeeded in removing the Al-Shabaab terrorist group from several areas located between Balcad and Afgooye.
Somali Federal Government forces have cleared areas along the Shabelle River that had long served as bases for Al-Shabaab operations. The group used these locations to organize and plan attacks.
The capture of these areas marks a significant achievement for Somali forces. Previous fighting in the area resulted in the deaths of several prominent officers, including the late General Farhan Qaroole.
If government forces maintain control of these areas, it could become an important step toward weakening Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities in areas close to Mogadishu.
The Somali government has previously cleared Al-Shabaab from the main road connecting Mogadishu and Marka.
