Monday, June 22, 2026 {HMC} British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation after speaking to the media amid widespread speculation about his decision to step down.
Keir explained the reason for his resignation and the timetable for the vacating office as he awaits a replacement, saying the decision was his and that his government would work to ensure that it remains in place.
Starmer said he would step down on July 9 and hand over the reins to a new prime minister, who he said would be a different government and a different political direction from his own.
The outgoing prime minister has come under pressure following Andy Burnham’s significant victory in the Makerfield by-election last week, which prompted him to make the decision.
Andy Burnham is the frontrunner to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, although there are other candidates from his party, but they will be separated by an election in the coming days, which will take place as planned.
