Friday, 18 Sep 2026 {HMC} The United States has agreed to give the United Nations an additional 12 months to phase out its support for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), according to a diplomatic note seen by Reuters.
The decision gives AUSSOM additional time amid funding shortages and uncertainty over its future logistical support.
According to Reuters, Washington said it was willing to support a 12-month drawdown period, beginning in January 2027, followed by the liquidation of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).
UNSOS currently provides critical logistical support to AUSSOM, including food, fuel, medical services, transportation and engineering support.
