Tuesday, 6, October 2026 {HMC} – The Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, Hon. Abdiqadir Mohamed Nur (Jama), delivered a historic address at the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which officially opened in Arusha, Tanzania.
Speaker Abdiqadir Mohamed Nur, whose speech focused on issues vital to the future of nations and the strengthening of global parliamentary cooperation, began by thanking the government and people of Tanzania for hosting the conference and for the warm welcome extended to the various delegations participating in the event.
Furthermore, the Speaker outlined Somalia’s vision for building a parliament that is independent, transparent, inclusive, and close to the people—one that plays a pivotal role in state-building, the advancement of democracy, and the strengthening of accountability.
He stated that Somalia has embarked on a democratic process in which direct elections play a crucial role; direct local elections have already taken place in the capital, Mogadishu, as well as in the South West, Hirshabelle, and Galmudug regional states, while the electoral process continues elsewhere.
Finally, the Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, Mr. Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe), emphasized the importance of strengthening institutions, fostering political dialogue, and ensuring public participation.
He affirmed Somalia’s commitment to ensuring the Parliament acts as an institution that safeguards the interests of the Somali people, bolsters confidence in national institutions, and holds the government accountable—steps that can play a significant role in building a peaceful, developed, and prosperous Somalia.
The 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), attended by leaders and representatives from parliaments worldwide, is focusing this year on advancing good governance, parliamentary cooperation, and the empowerment of societies through inclusive participation, trust, and equal opportunities.
