Wednesday, 2 Sep 2026 {HMC} — The United Nations has expressed support for Somalia’s plan to have its national forces gradually assume full responsibility for the country’s security, pledging to strengthen its support for the Somali security sector.
Amid recent reports that the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) could be closed, Somalia’s National Security Adviser, Aweys Ahmed, held a high-level meeting today with senior UNSOS officials at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu.
The meeting focused on several issues, including support for the Somali Armed Forces and matters related to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The Acting Head of UNSOS in Somalia, Qurat-ul-Ain Sadozai, reaffirmed the UN’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty, particularly efforts to rebuild and strengthen the Somali Armed Forces.
Somalia’s National Security Adviser said that the Federal Government maintains strong relations with the United Nations and expressed a commitment to further strengthening cooperation between the two sides.
The meeting comes shortly after the United States cut funding for UNSOS, which provides support to AUSSOM forces.
UNSOS plays a key role in supporting Somalia’s security operations, particularly through logistics, support services, and the facilitation of Somali-led military operations.
The Federal Government is continuing efforts to rebuild and strengthen the Somali Armed Forces so they can eventually assume full responsibility for the country’s security.
