Sunday, 12 Sep 2026 {HMC} The leadership of Somalia’s House of the People has announced the suspension of a $100 monthly contribution previously deducted from each Member of Parliament and deposited into the MPs’ welfare fund.
Speaker of the House of the People, Abduqaadir Mohamed Noor Jama, said the contribution was introduced at a time when Somalia was facing serious security and economic challenges. The fund was intended to provide support to lawmakers and the families of deceased MPs.
According to the Speaker, the circumstances that led to the establishment of the contribution have now changed, as government institutions and the country’s state-building process continue to strengthen.
“We have reached the most appropriate time to stop collecting this contribution,” the Speaker said.
Under the new decision, MPs will no longer have $100 deducted from their monthly salaries. Instead, when a serving MP dies, each MP will make a one-time contribution of $200 to help cover funeral and condolence-related expenses.
The parliamentary leadership also said the temporary arrangement is expected to eventually be replaced by a formal welfare fund that will address the needs of lawmakers.
Speaker Abduqaadir said the issue of the contribution had been repeatedly discussed in Parliament, with disagreements arising over how the collected funds were managed. He said the leadership wants to end the regular deductions and ensure that MPs receive their full salaries without the previous $100 contribution being deducted.
The parliamentary leadership also said it would work toward establishing a formal healthcare system for MPs to address their medical needs while they are in office.
