In the modern world, politics is not merely a struggle for power; it is an academic discipline studied in universities and research institutions across the globe. It is founded upon principles such as democracy, justice, accountability, individual liberty, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
However, there is an important distinction between politics and politicians. Politics represents a set of principles and values, while politicians are the individuals entrusted with implementing those principles. The quality and integrity of politicians ultimately determine whether politics serves the public good or becomes a tool for personal and group interests.
The Ideal Politician
A true politician is guided by principles, ethics, and a sense of public responsibility. Such an individual is willing to speak the truth and challenge wrongdoing, even when the misconduct originates within the system or institution they serve.
The characteristics of a principled politician include:
• Independence of thought.
• Integrity and transparency.
• Rejection of favoritism and tribalism.
• Opposition to corruption.
• Commitment to the public interest.
• Respect for democracy and the rule of law.
Politicians who embody these qualities can serve as genuine representatives of the people and defenders of democratic values.
Economic Dependency and Its Impact on Political Independence
One of the greatest threats to political independence is economic dependency. When an individual lacks an independent source of income and relies entirely on a salary provided by the system they serve, their ability to express independent views and defend their principles can become significantly constrained.
Economic dependency may compel individuals to:
• Remain silent when they witness wrongdoing.
• Defend decisions they privately disagree with.
• Accept humiliation or political pressure.
• Fear losing their employment or position.
• Prioritize personal survival over the public interest.
Under such circumstances, a politician risks losing intellectual and moral independence and may gradually become an instrument of the system rather than a representative of the people.
The Somali Experience
In Somalia, there have been many respected individuals who built strong reputations based on integrity, honesty, and public service. They were known for speaking truthfully, defending justice, and criticizing corruption and abuse of power.
However, once some of these individuals entered government institutions or political systems, noticeable changes often occurred. Many began defending policies and practices they had previously criticized, while others remained silent in the face of obvious misconduct.
Several factors contribute to this transformation:
• Fear of losing employment.
• Dependence on government salaries.
• Desire for political office and influence.
• Pressure from political leadership.
• Lack of alternative economic opportunities.
As a result, individuals who once enjoyed public respect and credibility may gradually lose the trust and admiration they had earned from society.
Economic Independence as the Foundation of Political Independence
History has shown that some of the most influential and respected political figures were those who possessed a degree of economic independence. Financial security enables individuals to defend their convictions without fear of retaliation or economic hardship.
When politicians have independent and legitimate sources of income:
• They are more willing to criticize wrongdoing.
• They can defend justice without fear.
• They are less vulnerable to corruption.
• They can preserve their dignity and integrity.
• They are more likely to place the public interest above personal gain.
Economic independence therefore serves as a safeguard for political independence and moral courage.
