Mogadishu, Somalia – August 22, 2026: The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) and Independent House jointly convened a public dialogue on August 19, 2026, at the Arkaan Leadership and Innovation Center in Mogadishu, focusing on the importance of an inclusive, participatory and credible electoral process in Somalia.
The dialogue brought together representatives from different segments of society and civil society organizations to discuss Somalia’s current electoral context, diverse perspectives on the electoral process, and the role of civil society in promoting inclusive public participation and democratic processes.
The key panelists participating in the public discussion included representatives from Somali Non-State Actors (SONSA), women’s rights activists, the Somali Women Education Centre, Somali Public Agenda, Media Independent House, and an independent political analyst.
Opening the event, FESOJ Secretary General Farah Omar Nur emphasized the critical role of journalists and the media in supporting informed public participation throughout the electoral process. He urged journalists and media organizations to provide accurate, balanced, independent and fact-based coverage of electoral developments and issues.
He further highlighted the role of the media in facilitating public dialogue, increasing citizens’ understanding of electoral processes, and providing platforms for diverse voices and perspectives.
The participants engaged in an in-depth discussion on pathways towards a more inclusive electoral process, key challenges and barriers to participation, and the role of civil society in promoting dialogue and bridging differences among stakeholders.
The discussions emphasized the importance of open and constructive dialogue, collaboration, transparency and inclusive participation in strengthening Somalia’s electoral process.
The participants also underscored the need for continued engagement among civil society organizations, media institutions and other stakeholders to promote greater representation, democracy, peace and stability.
FESOJ and Independent House reaffirmed their commitment to supporting initiatives that promote inclusive civic participation, informed public debate and responsible media engagement in Somalia’s electoral and democratic processes.
