Thursday, 23 July 2026 (HMC)Â Somalia has formally requested the Arab League to grant it its fair share of senior positions within the League’s General Secretariat and leadership posts of its missions.
The request was made during a meeting between Somalia’s Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Aware, and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil Fahmy.
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between Somalia and the Arab League, as well as discussing other issues of mutual interest.
Ambassador Ali Abdi conveyed greetings and congratulations from the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, to the Secretary-General on the occasion of his assumption of office.
He wished him success in his new role and expressed hope that he would further enhance Arab cooperation.
The ambassador also briefed the Secretary-General on the current situation in Somalia and the Somali government’s efforts to strengthen its partnership with the Arab League in order to advance the shared interests of Arab countries and promote regional cooperation.
During the meeting, Somalia officially requested that it be allocated its rightful share of senior positions within the Arab League’s General Secretariat, particularly leadership positions of the League’s missions and other permanent high-level posts.
For his part, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy reaffirmed the League’s continued support for Somalia and stated that the organization would give due consideration to the requests submitted by the Somali government, with the aim of strengthening cooperation and advancing the shared aspirations of Arab states.
The meeting forms part of Somalia’s broader efforts to strengthen its role and representation within regional institutions, as it seeks to secure its rightful share of senior positions in the Arab League.
