Khamiis 2. july 2026 {HMC}Â Somalia’s armed forces took part in the country’s Independence and Unification Day celebrations in Mogadishu on 1 July, commemorating the establishment of the Somali Republic in 1960.
The event featured a ceremonial military parade and a guard of honour by personnel of the Somali National Armed Forces, reflecting the nation’s pride, military professionalism, and enduring commitment to peace, security, and national development.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud presided over the official 66th anniversary celebrations, urging national unity.
The anniversary commemorates the day Somalia’s southern region officially gained independence from Italy on 1 July 1960, and its unification with the north, which had been ruled by British colonialists.
