Mogadishu, 11,Aug 2024 {HMC} Mudug Regional Police have arrested Barkhad Awil Hirsi, one of four Al-Shabaab prisoners who recently escaped from a prison in Galkayo.
Barkhad had been sentenced to death by shooting, though the sentence had yet to be carried out.
The police stated that a network of Al-Shabaab militants has been captured in Galkayo and is responsible for the deaths of many people.
The Puntland Police Command has offered a $20,000 reward for the capture of the escaped prisoners. However, the police did not confirm whether there was a reward for the arrest of Barkhad Awil Hirsi.
The police are now searching for the three remaining escapees: Abdiqani Saleban Jama (Sailor), Abdullahi Faisal Hussein (Abujonge), and Abdirahman Awil Mohammed (Sigayste).
The escaped Al-Shabaab members had been imprisoned for three years. The public has expressed concern over why they spent so much time in prison under a death sentence and questioned the lengthy trial process they underwent.
