Jimco, 21 March 2025 {HMC} – Sudanese forces fully took control of the presidential palace in Khartoum on Friday morning. Sudan’s state TV and military sources have reported that this marks one of the most significant developments in the two-year-long conflict, which threatens to break the country apart.
The military forces have been conducting search operations around the presidential palace while pursuing members of the RSF forces, according to reports.
Gunfire was heard in some of the central neighborhoods of the capital, Khartoum, as reported by witnesses to the Reuters news agency.
The conflict has led to what the UN has described as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, causing famine in many areas and widespread disease across the country. Both sides have been accused of committing war crimes, with the RSF also accused of carrying out massacres. Both parties have denied these allegations.
This armed group quickly seized the palace and much of the capital when the conflict erupted in April 2023. However, Sudan’s armed forces have regained ground in recent months and have moved towards the palace located along the Nile River.
Earlier this year, the RSF began to establish a parallel government to Sudan’s, and it has controlled parts of Khartoum, Omdurman, and western Sudan, where they have been fighting to take control of the last stronghold of the army in Darfur, Al-Fashir.
The seizure of the capital may hasten the military’s full control over central Sudan, further strengthening the eastern and western regions of the country, which are shared by both forces.
Both sides have vowed to continue fighting for the remainder of the country, with no peace talks currently underway.
