Wednesday, 19, March 2025 {HMC} The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) expresses its deep sorrow by the tragic deaths of independent journalists Mohamed Abukar, known as Dabashe, and Ayub Wardhere, who lost their lives in the explosion in Mogadishu today. We offer our heartfelt condolences to their families, colleagues, and the wider media community.
This loss is a significant blow to journalism and the pursuit of truth in Somalia.
As Farah Omar, the Secretary-General of FESOJ, stated, “The loss of these two journalists is not only a personal tragedy for their families, but a great loss for the entire Somali media community and the public.” Mohamed and Ayub demonstrated remarkable bravery and commitment in their work, often at great personal risk, to keep the public informed.
Additionally, we strongly condemn the wrongful detention by the Somali Police Force of 16 journalists who were reporting on the explosion. The arrest and mistreatment of journalists is a clear violation of press freedom and the public’s right to be informed.
As Abadir Abdukadir Elmi, the Chairperson of FESOJ, pointed out, “The harassment and detention of journalists simply doing their job is an attack on press freedom and the right to report the truth.” We call for the immediate release of all detained journalists and demand accountability for those responsible for these actions.
FESOJ calls on the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the tragic deaths of Mohamed Dabashe and Ayub Wardhere, as well as the unjust detention of the 16 journalists.
We urge the authorities to hold those responsible accountable and ensure that journalists are able to work safely and without fear of harassment or violence.
