Saturday 22, Febr-2025 {HMC} Somalia’s National Electoral Commission reaffirmed its commitment to holding a universal suffrage election in 2026, despite a boycott by two states and some opposition groups.
Chairman Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan said Thursday that the commission has made significant progress in preparing for the election—a milestone in Somalia’s political development. He noted that teams have visited numerous regions and districts to engage with local communities and stakeholders.
“The public is ready to embrace a one-person, one-vote system, people are eager to elect the leaders they want,” Hassan said.
Hassan also announced that local council elections will be held in June 2025 in Somalia’s southern and central regions. These contests are essential in the nation’s shift from clan-based politics to a more inclusive and democratic system.
The new voting model aims to empower citizens and improve political accountability. As the June elections near, the commission is working closely with federal and regional authorities, civil society groups, and international partners to ensure a fair process.
Established in November last year, the commission has faced resistance from some federal member states—especially Puntland and Jubbaland—and from political groups opposed to the Federal Government. Nonetheless, Hassan stressed that the commission remains determined to deliver a credible and transparent election.
