Sunday 22,Dec,2024 {HMC} The Federal Government of Somalia has assumed the Chairmanship of the Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF). This regional organization, dedicated to enhancing peace and security in Eastern Africa, comprises five regional multidimensional forces of the African Standby Force (ASF), which include military, police, and civilian components. These forces remain on standby for rapid deployment in response to peace support operations scenarios, addressing asymmetric threats and other security challenges.
During the 33rd Annual Policy-Making Conference of the EASF Heads of State held in Kigali, Rwanda, the Minister of Defense of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, officially took over the chairmanship from his Rwandan counterpart, Mr. Juvenal Marizamunda. This marks a significant milestone for Somalia, as it is the first time the country has chaired the Council of Ministers of Defense of the EASF since the organization’s establishment 20 years ago.
In his remarks, Minister Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur expressed his commitment to working closely with member states, partners, and friends of the EASF to promote a safer and more secure Eastern Africa region. He thanked the outgoing chairman for his service and reiterated Somalia’s dedication to collaborating with all EASF member states. Additionally, the Minister extended an invitation to host the next EASF session in Somalia, highlighting the country’s eagerness to contribute actively to regional peace and security initiatives.
This leadership transition shows Somalia’s growing role and commitment to regional stability and security, reflecting the country’s progress and aspirations on the international stage.
