Somali Cabinet reviews remaining chapters of provisional constitution.

Sunday 15,Dec,2024 {HMC}  Somali Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Ahmed Jama chaired a Council of Ministers meeting on Saturday night to discuss the ongoing revisions to the country’s provisional constitution, focusing on Chapters 5 and 9.

During the session, the Independent Constitutional Review and Implementation Commission (ICRIC) and the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Affairs briefed the cabinet on the progress of consultations regarding these chapters. The discussions highlighted recent engagements with various community groups to gather input on proposed revisions.

The cabinet members raised questions and provided input on the presented chapters, stressing the urgency of finalizing the constitution to ensure stability and clarity in governance.

Chapters 5 and 9 have been a focal point of recent deliberations, as the Committee seeks to incorporate public and stakeholder feedback before presenting the revised provisions to the Somali Parliament. Once submitted, the provisions will undergo multiple readings before a final parliamentary vote.

In March 2024, Somalia’s bicameral federal parliament approved amendments to the first four chapters in the country’s provisional constitution. One key revision granted the president the power to appoint and dismiss the prime minister, replacing the previous requirement for parliamentary approval of the prime minister through a vote of confidence.
