Sunday 8,Dec,2024 {HMC} Somali MP Hassan Abdi’ Yare’ has issued a public apology for assaulting a security officer inside the House of the People.
In a formal statement, Yare acknowledged his actions and apologized to both the security officer and the Somali public. “I take full responsibility for my conduct. I deeply regret what happened and offer my sincerest apologies,” he said during a reconciliation meeting to address the incident.
The altercation unfolded during a heated session on Wednesday as lawmakers clashed over the composition and role of the National Electoral Commission, an issue that has deepened political divisions. According to Somali Police officials, the officer was mediating tensions near the speaker’s podium when a lawmaker struck him on the nose. The officer, identified as a parliamentary guard, was treated at Medina Hospital, where Police Commissioner Asad Osman Abdullahi visited him.
The incident was reviewed by the House Committee on Rules, Ethics, Immunity, and Welfare, which aimed to address the breach of parliamentary etiquette. Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe), who facilitated the reconciliation, praised the resolution. “This should remind us of the high standards required of those in public office,” Madobe said in a statement.
Held at Speaker Madobe’s residence, the reconciliation meeting brought together Chief Whip Mohamed Abdullahi Hassan (Nuh), Rules Committee Chairperson Mohamed Ajiib, and several Upper House senators. Their collaboration highlights the legislative body’s commitment to accountability and ethical governance.
