Somali Ambassador to Turkey pushes for transfer of Somali prisoners from Turkey to Somalia.

Talaado 22-Octo-2024 {HMC}  – Turkish Deputy Justice Minister Ramazan Can met with the Somali Ambassador to Turkey, Fathudin Ali Ospite, in Ankara on Monday to
discuss bilateral cooperation on justice systems in both countries.

The meeting focused on the potential repatriation of Somali citizens serving
long prison sentences in Turkish prisons. Ambassador Ospite highlighted the
importance of enabling these individuals to serve the remainder of their
sentences in Somalia and be closer to their families.

Analysts suggest that such an agreement would benefit both nations. For
Turkey, it would reduce costs related to prisoner care, including food, medical
expenses, and prison management. For Somalia, it would allow prisoners to
reunite with their families and reintegrate into their communities.

The justice ministries of Somalia and Turkey are expected to continue
discussions to finalize the arrangements for transferring Somali prisoners to
their home country to serve the rest of their sentence.

In a related development, 157 Somali citizens, including men, women, and
children stranded in Aden, Yemen, were repatriated to Somalia on Monday
through a collaborative effort involving the Somali embassy in Yemen, the
UNHCR, and FMF. In recent years, the Somali government has facilitated the
