ATMIS Hands Over Mahaas Base to Somali Army

Wed August 2024 {HMC} After many years, the peacekeeping forces in Somalia, operating under the name ATMIS, have officially transferred their base in the Mahaas district of the Hiran region.

Today, the ATMIS army handed over its base in the Mahaas district of the Hiran region to the Somali army, which has taken over the security of the district.

This base, transferred by the ATMIS army to the national army, is the sixth ATMIS base to be transferred to the Somali government forces. The base was previously used by the Ethiopian army as part of the ATMIS operation.

The head of logistics for ATMIS peacekeeping forces, Col. Bosco Sibondavyi, spoke at the handover ceremony and praised the ATMIS forces and the Somali forces for protecting the local community and ensuring the region’s security.

Hussein Mohamed, the representative of the Somali army, also spoke at the event, stating that the Somali army is ready to take over the responsibility of security and continue the fight against the Al-Shabaab group.

Patrick Duah, head of transition planning for UNSOS, highlighted the importance of UNSOS in supporting Somalia’s transition plan in the peace process.

By the end of this year, it is expected that the ATMIS mission in Somalia will conclude, with other forces set to replace and operate under a new name, albeit with a smaller contingent than the current ATMIS mission.
