Khan’s conviction was related to the legality of the marriage that the former prime minister of Pakistan married his third wife Bushra Bibi in 2018, which prosecutors initially said was illegal.
This case appeared to be the last obstacle to the release of Imran Khan, after almost a year in prison. His supporters lined up outside the prison in Rawalpindi to salute him.
But a spokesman for his party said that shortly after the court decision came out, Khan was re-arrested. The party also said that his wife, Bushra Bibi, was arrested again. Both of them were accused of corruption.
The current government of Pakistan has already charged Imran Khan with more than 150 cases, including incitement to violence, corruption and other crimes.
Earlier this month, an independent UN human rights group called for Khan’s immediate release, saying he had been detained without reason, in violation of international law.
