Former President Farmajo visits Garowe for talks on constitution amendments

Thursday March 21, 2024

Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo arrived in Garowe, the administrative capital of the Puntland regional State, on Thursday for consultation meetings with regional leader Said Abdullahi Deni.

President Said Deni, along with other regional state officials, welcomed Farmajo’s delegation at the airport. Former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed is also expected to arrive in Garowe in the coming days to participate in Farmajo’s meetings with Said Deni.

President Said Abdullahi Dani was the leader of Somalia’s regional governments, who strongly opposed the former government of Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo. At that time, Deni criticized Farmajo for attempting to introduce an impossible electoral system in the country. Deni supported Hassan Sheikh in the runoff round of the 2022 election, which resulted in Hassan Sheikh’s victory over Farmajo.

Farmajo and Deni have now come together in opposition to President Hassan Sheikh’s government regarding constitutional amendments and reviews.

Two days ago, over 70 members from both chambers of the federal parliament strongly opposed President Mohamud’s plans to amend the country’s provisional constitution. They argued that the current process involves creating a new constitution rather than amending the existing one, which they believe threatens Somalia’s governance.
