Friday February 16, 2024 Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud travelled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Friday to participate in major conferences, including the 37th session of the African Union Summit.
In a statement, Villa Somalia announced that the president would convey Somalia’s clear stance against any interference in its independence and territorial integrity.
President Mohamud emphasized that the people and government of Somalia would not tolerate any actions undermining their nationalism and territorial integrity.
“We maintain our firm position regarding the issue of Ethiopia. Any violation against our country is an impossible dream, as we have already made clear to everyone. We are conveying this message to the world,” stated the president.
During his stay in Addis Ababa, President Mohamud will participate in three major conferences, including the 37th African Union (AU) Summit, IGAD, and the East Africa Community Leaders meeting.
The Somali government reiterated its stance that Somalia would not engage in mediation talks with Ethiopia until Addis Ababa retracts from the illegal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it signed with the breakaway region of Somaliland on January 1.
This MoU, which grants Ethiopia access to the Red Sea port of Berbera, has raised significant concerns about regional stability and security. Somalia strongly opposes this agreement, declaring it null and void, and has recalled its ambassador to Ethiopia.
